Alpha Program 2013 – Trip Update Day 8

Written by Elise Anderson; Program Director

It was another day in paradise for the Alpha Crew! At Nanny Cay, it was time for a mid-program sleep in, all the way to 8 o’clock! Everyone enjoyed the extra time to feel rested and then it was time to de-dock our big beautiful boats.
Georgia was at the helm on Badger B and drove us out of the docking slip calmly and confidently in wind conditions that were stronger than normal. She also clearly understood the principles behind working the lines that attach to the dock and how they affect the position of the boat. Paul was at the helm on Buoyant Asset and also did a great job driving the boat out of the marina from a tight space between the dock and another boat. Once out of the marina and into the channel, we set sail in some perfectly windy conditions! The crew on both boats learned the parts of the sail and how to reef the main sail. Then it was time to enjoy the boat flying over the water and swing our legs over the high side. On Badger B, everyone had fun goofing around and taking a ton of pictures.
Once we arrived at Cooper Island, it was time for the afternoon rotations through activities. Divemaster Sesno taught fish identification and took everyone on a snorkel over at Cistern Rock. While there, Jared, Paul, and Brandt, saw a barracuda, and can you believe it, a turtle! Another activity for the afternoon was paddle boarding! David loved it and so did Brandon. Everyone also had the chance to rotate through sailing our small keelboat Opal Bella. It was perfect conditions and everyone had a great chance to practice our sailing techniques. The afternoon of fun in the sun and the water made for a perfect summer day.
The evening cooled off and the sunset was absolutely incredible. Once night came, the crew drifted to sleep overlooking the sparkling lights on Tortola across the channel. Tomorrow is Challenge Day where the crew takes full responsibility of the navigation and the schedule of the day. It will be a great test of knowledge and the ultimate adventure!
