Alpha Program 2013 – Trip Update Day 10

Written by Christie Lee; Social Media Intern

What a day! This Tuesday I had the opportunity to spend nearly the entire day with the Alpha fleet during their beach day at the beautiful Bitter End Yacht Club on Virgin Gorda. Arriving on land shortly following breakfast, the students and staff set up camp under the resort’s giant beach side huts. A quick meeting was held as the staff relayed the various activities that would be available during the time ashore. From morning until the late afternoon, students had a wide range of choices and plenty of time to fit in all the things they wanted to do. From lounging around and playing sports on the white sand beach, small boat sailing through the clear blue water, browsing the resort’s souvenir shops, enjoying milkshakes and snacks from the pub, hiking to the top of the island, and of course the all-time favorite, tubing on the Poparazzi, the students certainly found ways to stay busy!

As the majority of the group left for the hike up the mountain, a few stayed behind to check out the shops and play a bit of lacrosse in the shallow waters of the shore. And although I didn’t participate in the hike, those who returned from the adventure gushed over the beautiful views of the ocean and surrounding islands from the top. Thankfully they took picture to show the rest of us! Then the rest of the activities kicked up and students dispersed throughout the resort. The first brave souls loaded into the ski boat for some tubing while Brandt, Olivia, Izzy, and CeCe, took out a hobie cat! When it was time for lunch time, students had the choice to either picnic on the beach or dine at the pub where many enjoyed the delicious pizzas, burgers, and salads. Some of the guys even took advantage of the fuze ball table while in the shade of the restaurant.

After the afternoon activities came to an end, the crews returned to their respective boats for showers and more excitement that was yet to come. It was chili cook off night and the two boats worked to prepare their own special chili for the competition, complete with themes and skits to go along with their recipes. After the presentation of their masterpieces, it was time for the sleepy students to settle in for bed after a long day of fun in the sun. There was no doubt that all would sleep well tonight!
