Delta 1 Trip Update Day 9 – Kieran, Program Director
This morning we got to sleep in until 8:15 a.m.!! After the early mornings and long days on Saba this felt like sleeping in until 10:00 p.m.
A nice relaxing morning before heading ashore to hike”The Quill.” The Quill is an extinct volcano which is well worth the hike. We made it up to the rim of the volcano, and it was clear enough to see to the other side and peer down in to the crater! Then, some of us hiked down in to the crater which is quite a treat: inside the crater, there are large, old growth Strangler fig trees that tower above you. The canopy makes it shady and dark inside, and all of the greenery feels magical.
As we hiked along, we kept our eyes peeled for endemic lizards and snakes! These particular species of reptiles can’t be found
anywhere else on the world! It’s not every day you see something like that!
As we made our way back to the boats after such a long day, we were tired, and happy to have a mellow afternoon. We took boat
showers, watched the sunset, and settled in for a quiet night onboard.
Tomorrow, we sail to St. Christopher! (St. Kitts). Unfortunately the internet in Statia is not very strong, but as soon as we arrive in St. Christopher more photos will be posted!
