Today, Steve was the skipper of the day and Josie was the mate. After breakfast, we took part in a community service trash dive. Renee, Alpha 3’s rotating mate, gave a trash talk on Xeres and told us all about the importance of caring for our environment and the effects we have on the world. We then went snorkeling around the mooring field and collected as much trash from the sea bed as possible. Chris, Kirk and Noah were especially good at this and helped collect a lot of trash which will help save a lot of marine life in the future.
In the afternoon, we went to shore and had lunch there, then began to shuttle to Long Bay to begin a day of Olympics against Xeres. The first event was the relay race, where we had Picos, kayaks and paddle boards. First, Bryce and Kirk expertly sailed the Pico around the staff boat for the first leg of the race, which was a close call but we heroically got back first. Next was the kayaking portion of the race, which Steve and Sophie competed in. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, Xeres took the lead at this point. The final part of the race was a swim around the dinghy, however it was pretty clear at this point that Xeres had won the event.
Next, we had a sand art competition where each team had to bury Sesno in the sand while creating a narrative for the art we created. Elinor and Josie suggested we make it themed around the film “Jaws.” We created a giant shark out of the sand and had it eating half of Sesno’s body. It was pretty clear that we beat Xeres. Noah, Daniel, Valeria and Sophie added finishing touches such as adding pieces of coral for teeth, which sealed our win.
The final event was a tug-of-war, where we completely pummeled Xeres! After, there was a BBQ on the beach with the Foxtrot fleet, which was a lot of fun. Noah, Bryce, Kirk, Chris and Josie played ninja with the other fleets. It was great to hang out with new people. We returned to the boats in the evening to hang out and power down. It was a very busy but fun day.
